Japanese Encephalitis is a mosquito-borne viral infection causing inflammation or swelling of the brain. Not all infected persons will develop the disease; however those who do may have serious central nervous system problems, and the case fatality rate may be as high as 30%. Vaccination should be obtained by people who plan to live in areas where Japanese Encephalitis is endemic or epidemic and by travelers whose activities include trips into rural, farming areas in these countries.
